Love of salt is in your genes

In the debate over whether to force manufacturers to reduce sodium in processed foods, I’ve observed that some will benefit more than others. It appears that some will also suffer more than others.

Although we know that people who eat a lot of salt develop a tolerance and preference for saltier foods, Penn State researchers find that genetics also plays a role in how salty you like your food. While some are happy with (or can at least adjust to) food with less salt, others will always find low-sodium foods especially unpalatable.

Interestingly, it seems as if those with hyper-sensitive taste buds (super-tasters) tend to choose saltier foods. Although they experience salt as super-salty, they appear to need more salt in order to block or balance bitter tastes that they experience as super-bitter. (See this summary from Medical News Today.)

This study used healthy volunteers. What I’d like to see now is an investigation into whether the super-taster trait is more or less likely in those with salt-sensitive hypertension!

Pool Supplies for Clean and Safe Swimming

The warm weather is here to stay for the season. With the heat and humidity, and immediate access to the sun?s hot rays, most people will want to jump in a pool eventually. Many homeowners build pools into their yards or maintain above ground pools. In either case, proper upkeep requires having the right pool supplies to keep it clean and safe for everyone.

Most importantly, it is essential to keep the water clean. Contaminants can find their way in from the air or from unknowing swimmers and foul the water. Small particles can buildup and make the pool unsightly to swim in. They can also cause injury if stepped on the wrong way. Pump and filtration systems can work on a consistent basis to intake water, filter it, and pass the clean water back out into the pool again.

Pool drains can be dangerous, especially for children. The suction is often overpowering for the strength of a child, so anti-entrapment systems can be used to stop the pump in case any suction is detected. This process works by allowing air into the pump, eliminating the force of entrapment almost immediately.

You can also keep the pool safe by getting the right ladder. Many kinds of ladders and steps are available. Depending on the type of pool, its depth, and how the ladder is being used, you?ll be able to gauge which product is most suitable. Lights are available for ladders as well.

Other pool supplies include pool heaters and thermometers. Some heaters are designed for installation above ground, but there are others that can be put below ground and out of sight. Various kinds of liners are available too, including expandable ones that will last and protect your pool even in winter. Accessories will help install liners as well as patch tears and holes.

Exercise tips for couples

I once had a girlfriend that asked me if I would train her if she signed up at my gym. Since she hadn?t exercised in years, I was generally excited that she was taking an interest in her health again and that she had asked me for help.

After two or three training sessions and one massive fight later, we never worked out again. That was also the last time I figure to help a lady friend out at the gym, but if you?re look for better luck than I had, Men?s Fitness.com offers these exercise tips for couples that want to work out together.

1.) Forget your own training.
“If you’re trying to show off by demonstrating how much you can lift, you’re going to have problems,” says Rachel Cosgrove, a strength and conditioning coach and co-owner of Results Fitness in Santa Clarita, Calif. “She wants you to pay attention to her.” This means concentrating on moves that she can do and enjoy (unless you want a dumbbell dropped on your foot).

2.) Say the right things.
Feed her compliments?and try to ensure that she processes them as such. “Don’t say, ‘Wow, your arms are getting so big,’ or, ‘You’re looking really buff!'” says Cosgrove. “If a woman hears that, she might never come back with you to the gym.” Instead, reinforce her work by telling her that her arms are really “toned,” or that her legs are “defined.”

3.) Know what she wants.
Her goals are to burn calories and fat, and get more “shapely.” So take it easy on the isolation exercises, use lighter weights and higher reps, and keep her moving. “Women are multitaskers,” says Cosgrove. “They want combination exercises, compound movements, and circuit sets.” In terms of body parts, she’s concerned with her legs, glutes, and?most of all?abs. “As much as guys love the bench press, that’s how much women love ab work,” says Joe Stankowski, a trainer of pageant contestants in Wilmington, Del. So grab a Swiss ball and crunch!

4.) Disguise the workout.
Women often fear weights, so hide weight training in moves like medicine-ball squats and med-ball overhead presses. You can also use those colored, plastic kettlebells for figure eights and swings. And here are always cable moves like wood chops. She will find these exercises more fun and less intimidating, and she won’t feel like she’s turning into the Incredible Hulkette.

A Chat with Amy Weber

Bullz-Eye.com editor Mike Furci sat down with hottie Amy Weber in December to discuss her book, her Borat-style improvisational mockumentary ?Becoming Pony Boi” and much more.

Bullz-Eye: Amy, this is Mike from Bullz-Eye.com. How are you today?

Amy Weber: Good.

BE: Well, I?ve been going to your site here and there and checking it out; very well done by the way. It?s really easy to navigate.

AW: Thank you.

BE: I?ve seen you many times since our last interview and in the magazines. You are one busy person. How did you get this career started? How did you get the ball rolling for yourself?

AW: You know it was really something I wanted to do since I was a young child. But I don?t think when you?re in Illinois a lot of people say oh yeah, you?re going to go out to L.A. and you?re going to become an actress and there?s a lot of support thrown behind you. But you know since I was a little kid I was always doing fine arts contests, which were basically monologues, and winning and entertaining people. It wasn?t until I actually moved to L.A. that I realized that I actually did have a history really as an actress as a kid. It?s just something in you; it?s hard to explain. I think there are other artists that understand. You?re a writer so I just think that there are things that you just want to tell people things, or you want to influence people in some sort of a way, or there are stories in your head that you want to get out there.
