3 running myths

1. Running will give you a heart attack or other heart problems. It is true that exercise temporarily raises the odds of a heart attack while you’re mid-workout, but doing it consistently reduces that risk over the long haul, leading to a net benefit. Some researchers have questioned whether marathon running, especially in people who haven’t trained a lot, might cause heart damage, at least temporarily. But there’s no evidence that it causes long-term harm or actually leads to heart attacks. Even athletes with enlarged hearts—if they’re healthy hearts—aren’t, as once feared, at risk of early death. The bottom line: Simply going for a run most days of the week is doing far more good than bad for your heart.

2. Running will ruin your bones and joints. A study in the August issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found no evidence of accelerated rates of osteoarthritis among long-distance runners when compared with healthy nonrunners. “We used to say that osteoarthritis came from wear and tear. That’s now revised to say that is can result from tear but not wear,” says James Fries, emeritus professor of medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine and senior author of the study. Moreover, weight-bearing exercise like running helps stave off osteoporosis by maintaining bone mineral density.

3. Running will kill you before your time. According to a study published this week in the Archives of Internal Medicine, running and other vigorous exercise in middle age is associated with a longer life. Not only that, it will make your later years more pleasant by reducing disability. After tracking runners and healthy nonrunners for 21 years, starting when they were at least 50 years old, a research team led by Stanford’s Fries found that the ability to perform activities of daily life like getting out of a chair and walking was better among runners than nonrunners. And 19 years into the study, 15 percent of the runners had died, compared with 34 percent of the nonrunners.

Wacko vegetarians!

In a past Q & A column I respond to some hilarious comments?made by a man defending vegetarians.? Here is one of his comments and my response.??

K:? And Vittoni!! for your obviously dumb comment on Asian looks see who all I found to be a vegans- Sir Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, Leo Tolstoy, Madonna, Paul McCartney, Socrates, Pythagoras, Mahatma Ghandi, H.G. Wells, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Plato, Leonardo Da Vinci, William Shakespeare, Buddha, Voltaire, Charles Darwin to name but a few.

BE:? I would love to see the proof that these people are all vegans, or even vegetarians. Do you really think Buddha got to be such a fat ass from vegetables? Although, maybe he went against the grain of Asian culture and ate large quantities of soy. This would have ensured his obesity, because of the detrimental effects it has on the thyroid. And by the way, Madonna has eaten plenty of meat, and has had her share of protein…if you know what I mean.

Supplements may be illegal in Canada

So you want to take Vitamin C, how about if it was illegal to take that vitamin C, what if it was so illegal that you could be thrown in jail for up to 2 years and fined up to $5,000,000! Sounds like fiction doesn’t it?

Well it’s about to become reality in Canada. The Canadian Government is trying to pass a bill known as Bill C51. This bill has already passed its second reading and it is flying under the radar, it is very close to becoming law and some powers that be DON’T WANT YOU TO KNOW! This bill would give entire control of supplements over to drug companies by only allowing MDs to “Prescribe” them as they see fit. Of course we know here in this country the government controls the doctors and the pharmaceutical companies tell the government what laws they want inorder to make more profit. What this means is that if you want to take a multivitamin or some Omega-3, you have to book an appointment with your doctor, go in and try to convince your doctor that you are in need of these supplements. If you doctor doesn’t approve or better yet decides a certain drug would be better off for you then you unfortunately won’t have access to your supplements anymore.

The entire natural supplement industry will collapse if this bill passes. Thousands of jobs will be lost and even more stress will be placed on an already crumbing over-stressed national health care system. Imagine waiting over a month to get in to see your MD just to request if you can take some oregano oil for a cold that has now come and past, only to have your request denied anyway.

MDs who are NOT trained in the use of herbs and supplements will have full control over what you can and CANNOT TAKE. To summarize:

– No More Supplement Stores!

– Supplements are made illegal unless obtained through a prescription and 70% of all current supplements on the market will be removed!

– Prices for obtainable supplements will be higher than they are currently due to the monopolization, and being made into prescriptions!

– Restrict research and development of safe natural alternatives in favor of high risk drugs!

– Punish Canadians with little or no opportunity for protection or recourse for simply speaking about or giving a natural product without the approval of government!

– Fines of up to $5,000,000.00 and/or seek 2 years in jail per incident of being caught breaking any of these newly implemented laws. This includes USING OR SELLING SUPPLEMENTS WITHOUT GOVERNMENT APPROVAL!

– YOU WILL LOSE ALL YOUR RIGHTS AND FREEDOM OF CHOICE REGARDING YOUR OWN PERSONAL USE OF SUPPLEMENTS and NATURAL MEDICINE IN CANADA!

No More Vitamin C, No More Omega-3, No More Oregano Oil, No More Natural Multivitamins, No more natural sleep aids, NO MORE HERBS, VITAMINS, MINERALS. No more choice in what YOU want to do for YOUR HEALTH!

6 OXO – higher test, lower estrogen

Better health, better wellbeing, more muscle and a higher libido are all side effects of higher testosterone levels.? What red blooded male doesn’t want to feel stronger more aggressive and hornier??

During male puberty, androgens (testosterone) cause secondary sex characteristics to develop:?? deeper voice, broader shoulders, more muscle mass, wider shoulders and facial hair growth.?? These levels of testosterone continue until we start to get into our early 40’s.? As men proceed through midlife, we slowly start producing less and less testosterone.? Unfortunately we have an inverse production of estrogen.? This change in hormone levels is sometimes referred to as andropause.

Hormone replacement therapy is a healthy solution to combat the symptoms of andropause.? However, for those who do not want to take hormones or for those who just can’t afford it, a few supplements offer a viable drug free alternative.

A study reported in the Journal of International Society of Sports Nutrition 2007,4:13, analyzed the effects of? supplementing for 8 weeks with 6-OXO, a supplement made by Ergopharm purported to be an aromatase inhibitor.? 16 males consumed 300mg or 600mg in a double blind manner.? Blood tests were taken at weeks 0,1,3,8 and 11(a 3 week washout period).? Results showed significant increases in testosterone, free testosterone and an increase in the testosterone to estrogen ratio, all being desirable.?

Looks like a winner!
