Hypothyroidism can be caused by a variety of things. In this country, diet is the main culprit. Our food supply is so deficient in nutrients and loaded with anti-nutrients that it’s really no surprise we are experiencing health problems in epidemic proportions. Vegetable oils (polyunsaturated fats) are a huge contributor to hypothyroidism, obesity, cardio vascular disease and other health problems. These are man-made foods that have only been around since the early 1900s, with soy oil becoming the number one cooking oil by the 1950s. Before then, beef tallow, lard, olive oil and tropical oils were in use, and heart disease, hypothyroidism, obesity, diabetes and other diseases were but a fraction of the incidence they are today.

Great work, Mike. There is one thing obese/overweight Americans need to know (I am a doctor.) Many of these nice but heavy people blame their overweight on either heredity or “thyroid problems” or metabolism problems. While those things can play some part in weight management…what you are is what you eat. I have been an athlete all my life. Done Boston Marathon, climbed Mt. Lassen & Half Dome, adventure raced, etc. I’m 41 and weigh 110. My mom is 64 and weighs 224. She doesn’t exercise and doesn’t eat right. I exercise at least 30 mins every day even if just a slow walk. I eat 6 small meals a day. I love my mom to death but she doesn’t eat in moderation. I drink wine every…ok 5-6 days a week. I eat 2 cookies or an ice cream every day. But other than that I eat healthy and I am fit. Everything in real moderation is really a big answer. Lard makes me want to puke. But, if people like lard, have a LITTLE now and then. In the US we are spoiled and need to exercise self control. Self control and discipline are the BIGGEST key…every thing in moderation I think is the answer. Hypothyroid is hereditary and does happen to some people. It isn’t that hard to control overall. But eating right and exercise are. I always pray that people will work harder at that. I LOVE your column.
Thanks Tiny Doc!
Although you are correct in saying some overweight people are lazy and eat way too much, studies show the vast majority of overweight individual are not gluttons. Products like fructose, vegetable oils, soy, pesticides and environmental estrogens play the biggest role in the obesity epidemic and thyroid pathologies. Until we as a society start demanding a health food supply the incidence of these and other problems are going to continue to rise.
