Should celebrities endorse soft drinks filled with sugar?

More and more studies are teaching us how too much sugar in our diet can lead to serious health issues, including conditions like obesity. This has triggered all sorts of policy debates with the Mayor of New York banning large soft drinks while others argue that the government shouldn’t get involved. Both sides have a point but with so much of our federal budget tied to health care costs we all need to consider these issues, while also looking in the mirror and asking ourselves whether we consume too much sugar.

Soft drinks in particular are a huge source of excess sugar in our diets, and now even stars like Beyonce are feeling some heat around this issue. For example, “The Center for Science in the Public Interest wants Beyonce to turn her back on her $50 million deal with Pepsi because the sugary drink is associated with obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.” That’s quite a bit a money to turn down, and I guess she could only focus on Diet Pepsi, but in many ways this controversy illustrates how far we have come with awareness on this issue. I doubt Beyonce will end her deal, but now there is some PR price to be paid when a celebrity gets behind these types of products.

Of course, we need to do more than just cut down on sugar to improve our diet and our health, though it would be a great start for most people. It’s important to find healthy foods as a substitute for things like sugar and fat that we want to reduce. Another approach involves taking vitamins and supplements like the ones found at Predator Nutrition to round out what you consume as well.

It is encouraging, however, that the feedback we’re getting from commercials might be balanced a bit by the loud voices explaining the health risks of things like sugar along with the health benefits of fruits and vegetables.

Promoting your gym

The gym business hasn’t changed dramatically over the past 20 years, though we’ve certainly seen an evolution. Gyms are better at catering to different groups of potential customers, as many have added classes that appeal to women and men, and mixed things up with yoga, pilates and other options. Nutrition is also an area that gets more attention in gyms as well.

It’s on the marketing side where we’re seeing some big changes and opportunities for gym owners that are in tune with social media and see the potential to create a real online community. Facebook and Twitter should be a part of every gym owner’s strategy to market the gym. With these tools, your best and loyal customers can become evangelists for your gym, and then you can push out cool photos, workout ideas, class schedules etc that these people can then share with their friends. You’ll reach more people and build more customer loyalty.

This works best when you couple this with traditional methods like advertising and brochures. Gym owners can use online printing to reduce their costs by printing brochures online at UPrinting or other venders on the web. You can also use modern computer programs to effectively track all your customer memberships, and you should definitely use email blasts as well.

The bottom line is that you can run and promote a gym these days that makes your operation much more efficient.

Adrian Peterson is back from ACL tear

Image source: Minnesota Vikings Facebook page

Adrian Peterson is a beast. Just look at the photo above where he’s rehabbing and trying to come back from his torn ACL from last season. He’s also one of the wild cards out there that make it very hard to pick games in the early part of the NFL season. Imagine all the research betters do as they look for more sports betting as the NFL kicks off, but research can’t tell you everything. We knew Peterson was a freak of nature, but we had no idea he could come back so quickly as he scored two touchdowns in week one.

Fantasy football owners were left guessing as well. Peterson fell pretty far in some drafts, yet he defied the odds and was back in week one. Every indication is that he had a brutal rehab and workout schedule to get him back on the field. Now he’s claiming that he’s back to 95% of his ability and that he’s the still the best running back in the NFL.

We’ll see of he can back that one up. He’s accomplished so much and he’s already impressed NFL experts and fans alike. The key now is to see how the knee holds up through a long NFL season. It’s a brutal sport and sometimes all of the work and preparation can amount to nothing if you get hit in the wrong spot.

But Peterson’s story should be an inspiration to other athletes and regular Joes who suffer an injury like a torn ACL. You can come back. The key is focusing and putting in the work with a good trainer.
