Gyms and fitness centres can house many germs that can make you sick. People sweat all over the equipment and most do not wipe it clean, or do not clean it properly after use. The best measures to take to ensure your facility is as hygienic is possible is to take a proactive approach. Here are some tips to help you to ensure your hygienic safety while at the fitness centre.

Wipe Equipment Before and After Use

Fitness centres are hot places with sweaty people touching everything. You can never be sure that other members are doing the right thing and wiping down the equipment after every use unless you see them. Be proactive and wipe down your machines before and after you use them. Take extra steps to know that you are doing your part in keeping the environment and yourself as germ-free as possible. Wiping equipment also includes you! Wash your hands immediately after you finish your fitness session and wash all your gear when you get home.

Invest in a Solid Water Bottle

Fitness centres will offer water fountains or coolers that provide cool water during your workouts. If possible, stay away from fountains because this is where people bend down and put their mouth close to the spout. Stand up water coolers are a safer bet when trying to stay germ-free, so be sure to bring a sturdy water bottle so you won’t have to rely on those fountains. Also try to get a stainless steel water bottle rather than the standard plastic bottle, as plastic harbours germs more easily.

Do Not Go Barefoot

This might be an obvious tip, but do not go barefoot in the fitness centre. These environments can see a lot of traffic during the day before cleaning takes place. With so many people walking around the main floor and the changing areas, germs will linger. If you have to shower at the fitness centre, be sure to wear flip-flops.

Consult with the Employees/Trainers

Have a conversation with the fitness centre staff. Ask them what processes are in place to protect the gym patrons.
